Challenges of Social Media Marketing

Has there ever been a day where you recall not checking your social media accounts? We live in such a hyper-technological society where many hours of the day are spent scrolling through Facebook or Instagram pages.

Without a doubt, social media has heavily influenced our daily lives. Living in a generation of smartphones, tablets, and free WiFi; social media has also become a full time job for some. While social media can be very beneficial financially for some bloggers, it can also have a negative impact on their daily lives. These bloggers maintain a stable income through endorsing products and submitting reviews based on their personal experience. Bloggers with a large following use their social media platforms through a “billboard” method: endorsing products to increase sales for many brands. For many companies, this is a great way of marketing and advancing in their careers however it can also have a serious negative impact.

Extreme Levels of Stress

Many bloggers tend to face high levels of stress due to the immense pressure that social media marketing has on its endorsers. They feel the constant need of gaining approval from their audience in order to advance in their career. At times, the audience may exemplify negative behavior towards a blogger’s content which can lead to very stressful situations. Not to mention, a high volume of followers is a requirement in order to continuously endorse brands. Beauty blogger Amra Olević, also known as “Amrezy”, has worked immensely hard throughout her career in order to gain over 4.3 million followers. Now you tell me, would you be able to handle all the stress that comes with it?

Cyber-Bullying for Public Figures

Cyber-bullying is also very evident in social media culture. Many bloggers and endorsers tend to face this challenge very frequently. Such challenges can definitely trigger mental health issues. This issue is not seen as a very serious matter and the only coping method would be to simply “ignore the hate” because it is considered natural behavior. Previous Dash Doll and business owner Durrani Popal addresses her “haters” who constantly publish negative comments underneath her Instagram pictures. She tweets, “If you don’t know me personally and you hate me, you have major issues. Please seek help.”

Mental Health Issues

Viewing mental health issues in relation to social media: anxiety and depression are very prominent. This is a result of cyber-bullying and stressful endorsing methods. Furthermore, there are many other mental health issues evident in regards to this matter, such as narcissist characteristics. In the current millennial generation, social media users consistently post selfies in order to gain approval from their audience. While being a full-time blogger/endorser, posting pictures for advertisement purposes can be beneficial, however it can also lead to many serious mental health issues. Although bloggers of today’s generation have not become a victim of this health issue, there has been one serious case in the past. A nineteen year old Englishman had developed a serious case of narcissism. He was diagnosed with selfie-addiction, to an extent where he became suicidal over capturing the perfect angles. He took over two hundred photos a day and was never fully content with them. Although this was a very serious case, selfie addiction has become a much more common issue with modern technology.

With all of that being said, would you still take on the risks of becoming a public figure on social media? Do you consider social media marketing to your advantage or disadvantage?
