In an increasingly broken and chaotic world, we can struggle to find a tangible, collective solution to our woes. I increasingly believe that dogs might hold the answers we seek. Or, at least the unconditional love we need. Dogs might save us, one tail wag at a time.

One cool October morning, I awoke feeling despondent. Storm clouds full of bad news and frustration circled ahead and ripped open, pelting me with defeating thoughts and a burning desire to crawl under my covers and hide for 48 hours.

I wanted to stave off the threatening depression, so I forced myself to set out for a long trail run — okay, speed walk — hopeful for the relief fresh air and the beauty of my surroundings might bring.

The mountain trail I chose to trek is usually full of hikers and bikers, but on this day, I didn’t see another human for my first 2.5 miles. I soaked in the silence and spent time in self-reflection until laughter and a shouted command broke my insulation. “Chandler! Stop! She doesn’t want you to bug her.”

I turned around and saw a brindle-colored puppy scampering toward me. His owner laughed and told me, “I’m so sorry. He’s usually really shy around people.”
