Film: The Count of Monte Cristo. Year: 2024. Genre: Period Drama/Action/Adventure/Drama/History/Romance/Thriller. Directors:
Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte

The Count of Monte Cristo has been adapted multiple times, with this year’s full-length feature by co-writers/directors Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte (both of What’s in a Name?, The Best Is Yet to Come) being the latest entry on the list. While many directors, such as Kevin Reynolds in 2002 and Josée Dayan in 1998, brought Alexandre Dumas’ story to life uniquely, no one did it as great as de La Patellière and Delaporte. Their Count of Monte Cristo is packed with overly French and suave acting performances, marvelous set pieces, and fast-paced cinematography, resulting in a lavishing, sumptuous and exhilarating adaptation.

Converting a 1,200-page novel into a compelling and captivating movie isn’t easy, but despite the film clocking in at over 178 minutes, the feature fully embraces its lengthy runtime. While it obviously still centres on the known story, it gives a much more prominent place to other elements, such as the tremendous acting, visuals, costumes, and more.
