As a broadcaster, attending conventions that are supported by the community (and even the ones that aren’t) can make, and break your channel. Often times, small to mid level broadcasters are weary about attending conventions because extensive offline time can be a turning point for their broadcast, a turning point straight for the ground.

It’s important to understand how conventions can benefit you and your channel, but also the steps you should take to make sure that you’re making the right choice in taking time off from broadcasting to attend these conventions.

Communicate with your Community.

Unfortunately this is not as common practice as you think it is. It’s quite common to tell your community, “Hey! I’m heading to CONVENTION! I won’t be broadcasting between x and y days!” However, it’s always wise to communicate the things you’ll be doing at the Convention and its surrounding areas, and what times you might have awhile to meet up with your following. Always try to include your community in as many events at conventions as possible. It keeps you fresh on their mind, plus it’s great to be able to hang out with the people that keep you company while you broadcast!

Absolutely no radio silence!

The best part about broadcasting live on a live-streaming platform is that you have the ability to gain viewers from all around the world. Unfortunately, every person that watches your stream may not be able to attend the convention you’re going to — so help them out! Giving updates, posting tons of pictures, videos, and your schedule in-case something you’re doing is broadcasted are all good practices. Keeping your viewers engaged with you and your content while your stream is offline will keep them coming back.

Network, Network, Network.

Conventions are a lot of fun! You get to meet some awesome people, see some awesome stuff, and hang out and just relax from the day to day grind of “real life”. If you want to continue growing your channel, you’ll also understand that attending conventions present tons of opportunities!

Networking with other broadcasters is a great way to work towards collaborative efforts for both your channel, and theirs. Working on projects, producing content with others, and developing relationships with other content creators not only helps you grow, but also helps them as well. Don’t be afraid to reach out to other broadcasters — everyone started from somewhere, and most people understand the path you’re going down, if you’re good at what you do and have a personality that clicks with theirs, you’re set!

Networking doesn’t stop there!

Conventions are the home for industry professionals. You’ll see a plethora of game studios, startups, tech companies and more advertising their product in the Expo Hall of most conventions. These companies are there not only to showcase their product, but also to connect with content creators and other professionals within the Industry. Connecting with these guys can lead to partnerships, sponsorships, and a great way to push your channel in the right direction.

What to Bring.

The needs you’ll have at a convention are pretty dynamic, however, Ryan Hiller from GeekDad.com has prepared an amazing, in-depth checklist that all convention goers, including broadcasters should use to make sure they’re fully prepared for their trip! In Conclusion.

Only you know your community and how they’ll respond, however! If you follow the advice in this post with along side of knowing your community — I can assure you that you’ll not only have an amazing time, you’ll also come home feeling accomplished and excited for the next chapter of your broadcast!

Be prepared, and have fun!
