Once Upon a Brad

If you recognize this, you know that once upon a time it was a cherished item that when used, meant you had a screenplay to sell. The choice of this item, its weight and quality, whether you used two or three on your script, did you buy the really long ones and bend them back over to secure the pages, etc. There were companies in LA dedicated to printing and binding screenplays.

Those all went away once you could simply PDF a script and email it. I still print scripts sometimes, but mostly for when I want to proofread or mark them up. I have dozens of these brads in an organizer, and will likely never use them all up. The script printing shops are all gone. People don’t trade screenplays like they once did.

Why do I bring this up? it’s not nostalgia, though I do love the feel of a printed script. But I keep reading all this hand-wringing about AI overtaking creative. People are freaked out. Maybe rightfully so. But also, maybe it’s just change. Maybe AI becomes another tool you can use to supercharge your work in any creative field. Like the shift from hand-delivering a physical script to emailing it.

I’ve been playing with ChatGPT enough to know that yeah, it’s impressive. Yes it actually can do some basic creative. Yeah, it’ll probably get better. But there will always be the human aspect to creativity that will be prized. And maybe you can leverage this tech to become even more valuable.

One thing that’s definitely true. If you hold on to how things were, you’re not gonna be a part of how things are going to be.
