Whether you are an avid Hoosier fan or an opera buff, IU is the place to be!

With 24 varsity athletics, the Indiana Hoosiers have won 24 NCAA Championships, 181 Big Ten Championships, and 104 Olympic medals. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, 15 Hoosier athletes brought home 2 bronze, 5 silver, and 4 gold medals. In fact, if IU were its own country, we would’ve ranked 23rd in terms of medal count!

Some notable IU athletics alums include Mark Splitz, Lilly King, Cody Miller, and Andrew Capobianco from the swim and dive team and Mike Woodson, Isiah Thomas, Walt Bellamy, and Eric Gordon from men’s basketball.

Hoosier athletes take the world’s stage every time they set foot on the court, and just across the Bloomington campus, Jacobs School of Music students do the same.

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is one of the world’s top-ranking music institutions and is especially known for its Opera and Ballet Theater. Each year, Jacobs presents six fully staged operas and four ballets, all of which take place at the Musical Arts Center. In 2018, the IU Opera Theater partnered with the Sante Fe Opera, Seattle Opera, and the San Francisco Opera to present the premiere of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs (Mason Bates) and is performing the world premiere of Anne Frank (Shulamit Ran) in March of 2023. Jacobs is the only non-professional company to stage an opera at New York City’s Metropolitan Opera.

The Musical Arts Center’s stage is about half the size of the Met Opera’s by design, providing an authentic space for pre-professional singers. The MAC also presents performances by the 20+ bands, orchestras, and choral ensembles at the Jacobs School of Music. Check out the Jacobs website for information on all current performances; most of them are completely free!

If you’re a student or just visiting IU for the weekend, you can see some of the world’s best student athletes and musicians right here on our campus. Take advantage of all IU has to offer!
