Hey Hoosier Nation!

Winter, like every season in Bloomington, has its unique charm and beauty. However, the cold and the difficult weather can make once-enjoyable activities miserable. For the significant part of our student body that has never experienced a Midwestern winter, here are five tips to make the season merry and bright.

  1. For those with a car on campus, allot yourself plenty of wiggle room between engagements to scrape or warm up your car. This will also give yourself time to drive slower and safer on the slick roads. Being in a hurry this time of year is more dangerous than others, so make sure you’re allowing time to drive safe and take care of your vehicle!
  2. While a winter coat is pretty standard, most people neglect the necessity of a hat or winter headwear. Walks between buildings on campus can be pretty extensive, so protecting your ears from the chill can make the hike less brutal.
  3. Another highly underrated winter garment is a good pair of boots. Snow and ice are indeed made of water and can soak shoes very easily. Even though you may just be walking on the sidewalk, there is no guarantee that every walking path is salted so walking through snow is to be expected.
  4. For those looking to keep the electric and heating bill down in the winter, I highly suggest investing in a good set of curtains. They make a colorful addition to any room, require a Disney princess-like maneuver to open, and keep the cold air from coming through your windows.
  5. Finally, the cold air sucks all the moisture out of your skin, so lotion and chapstick will become your two best friends this season. Keep your skin well moisturized and avoid chapped lips with both of those items!
  6. While you’re making snowmen and sledding and drinking hot chocolate, I hope you feel warm and safe this winter!
