Applications for the 2019 Student Design Charette in Seattle are underway. We’re proud to be working with our sponsors at Microsoft. The brief for the challenge is

How might we build empathy to help address a local Seattle opportunity? How can we create a mechanism for empathy for one audience that can be applied to other audiences and contexts?

Empathy is a fundamental skill for interaction designers. Learning how to scale it from a local scenario to a global one is fundamental to solving the wicked problems in the world today. “Think local, act global” for the digital era.

This year we’re expanding our definition of student. We’re accepting applications from anyone that is:

  • currently in or recently graduated from an undergraduate program
  • currently in or recently graduated from a graduate program
  • currently attending or recently complete a program at an institution like General Assembly or Hyper Island
  • in an apprentice program
  • in an internship program
  • in their first year as an interaction design professional
  • Essentially anyone who is taking their first steps on their journey as an interaction designer

The finalists selected from submissions win a free trip to Seattle and get to experience Interaction 19. Read up on the brief and apply before the extended deadline on 9 Dec if you’d like to learn more about designing for empathy at scale. Join us.
