Apple published an article explaining how sleep mode on the AirPods Max works and what the different stages of sleep mode are.

Sleep Mode

AirPods Max cannot be turned off by any button or command. They are always on. Apple doesn’t expect us to worry about it and they do all the work for us — like they tend to do. I am a person who likes to have full control of their device, but it’s something that doesn’t bother me too much. Here are the possible stages.

Here’s what you can expect:

If you charge your AirPods Max for 5 minutes, you get around 1.5 hours of listening time.

If you set your AirPods Max down and leave them stationary for 5 minutes, they go into a low power mode to preserve battery charge. After 72 stationary hours out of the Smart Case, your AirPods Max go into a lower power mode that turns off Bluetooth and Find My to preserve battery charge further.

If you put your AirPods Max in the Smart Case when you’re not using them, they go into a low power mode immediately to preserve battery charge. After 18 hours in the Smart Case, your AirPods Max go into an ultralow power mode that turns off Bluetooth and Find My and maximizes battery life.

It is important to differentiate sleep mode and low-power mode. AirPods Max are supported by the Find My app, thanks to which you can track their location. This requires Bluetooth to be turned on and it remains active in the sleep mode. Moreover, it allows you to reconnect to all your devices faster when putting the headphones back on. Lower power mode, on the other hand, means this is turned off.

I hope that there is little power loss regardless of mode, as I expect most users will keep their pair on a stand or desk and keep the designer case out of sight.
