My design process is iterative at the core and my M.O. is to continuously revisit and connect designs directly to the research. There are two steps that guide my process:
(1st) design the right thing using research
(2nd) design things right through iteration
My process begins in the discovery phase through research following with compilation through synthesis in order to design the right thing. During research, there is a focus on user needs always, as well as the consideration of business goals. The methods I use during discovery and compilation include user research:
- user interviews
- affinity mapping
- “I” statements
- archetypes
- persona creation
and reviewing the competitive landscape:
- competitor matrix
- feature analysis
- element analysis
- business analysis
Next, I take the research into the design things right phase typically beginning with ideation using the design studio methodology. Once ideation is in process, all ideas are organized and prioritized using a MoSCoW matrix. Then, I turn to storyboarding and sketching followed with the creation of task flows. Finally, the sketched designs are digitized and linked into a prototype to test on users (usability testing, A/B testing) in order to figure KPIs, then use the findings to iterate on the designs.
If at any point during this process I hit a wall, I will always return to the research to be sure the product delivered is exactly what the user needs. As my design process is iterative, it ends and then begins again with next steps.
