Today’s topic comes from a number of my previous interviews for The Future of Work Podcast and The Future of Work Show. I have been privileged to interview many executives who are responsible for their company as a whole, or are responsible for the people and talent functions in their organizations.

I ask the same question in each of my interviews. What is the one piece of advice to employees on how they should stay relevant and adapt in this rapidly changing world. Can you guess what they said? The number one piece of advice is “Learn how to learn.”
We are starting to see things change very quickly in today’s workplace. A lot of the things we learned while in school are no longer relevant. Skills that were once coveted are now outdated. The ability for employees to learn how to learn is the number one skill being assessed today. It is not only what executives are looking for, but something the individual contributor needs to be consciously aware of.

What happens when your previous knowledge and academic credentials are no longer relevant and valid in today’s world? You have to learn new skills! This is relevant for all types of job types. When looking into the future of what your job or career holds, you can done one of two things. You can sit and wait for things to threaten your job, or you can look out into the future and see that this is coming your way and start to learn things now. I am here to tell you that things are changing no matter what. The time to adapt and learn is now, and prepare for what is coming to the workplace. There are many you can do right now while thinking about your career. For example, there are numerous learning opportunities online, and you can start to take advantage of online courses that are available. Places like www.udemy.com/, www.khanacademy.org, www.coursera.org, and www.lynda.com have many types of development and educational courses that are relevant to jobs of today and tomorrow. Don’t wait for your job to be replaced! Start to think 5 to 10 years ahead. You may be in food services, but have a passion for data analytics, or manufacturing and have a passion for marketing, you can start to take courses in these fields right now!
This is the number one way to future proof your career. Learn how to learn. Always be learning. We can’t rely on organizations or institutions. You can only rely on yourself when it comes to your career.

Leave a comment below, as I would love to hear your thoughts on this! What are you doing to stay relevant?
