For as much as we talk and debate about artificial intelligence, you might think it’s a new topic. But in reality, AI has been around for decades. It’s only recently that we’ve started having involved dialogues and debates about its uses and future. Why the sudden push for AI? It’s a combination of four factors that work together to create the perfect storm to catapult AI towards the future.

Huge amounts of data.

While the concept of AI has been around since the 1950s, there hasn’t been enough data to truly show its power until recently. AI simply isn’t as impressive or necessary when it doesn’t have large amounts of data to process. 90% of the world’s data was created in the last two years — much more than any human could ever comprehend. The huge growth of data means that now AI has a real purpose. It has data to sort through and analyze and can now provide companies with powerful insights. While technology has always been there, it needed the data to fuel progress.

Decreasing technology costs.

Technology used to only be reserved for incredibly wealthy companies and individuals, but that’s no longer the case. As technology becomes more mainstream, the cost has gone down, making it more accessible to people around the world. Cheaper technology provides more options to build technology, which has increased the pace of innovation.

Increasing speed of technology.

As technology advances, it gets increasingly faster. Today’s computers and smartphones are much faster than what was created even just a year ago. Faster speeds allow AI to compute and calculate faster and provide accurate results nearly instantly.

More capable computers.

Moore’s Law states that the number of transistors on a microchip doubles every two years as the cost of the computer is halved. More capable computers mean we can make processors more powerful and smaller, which fuels technological progress.

AI has grown drastically in just the last few years because of these factors. Working together, these factors create the perfect storm for AI to take the world by storm. As the speed, capability, and data for AI increases, humans are beginning to see its potential. What was unimaginable even a few years ago is now not only probable, but likely already being developed. Because of these reasons, AI is poised to take off.

It’s important for companies and individuals to have conversations about AI. New technology will unavoidably become part of our lives, and the people and organizations that are best prepared for the future will embrace these changes with open arms. AI can now do things humans used to do, as well as tasks we’ve never been able to accomplish. As the speed and capability continues to grow, AI will only become more powerful. Are you ready?
