Other Backward Classes (OBC) is a big proportion of Indian Population…

In the absence of caste census, till date there is enough speculation on the proportion of OBC population in Indian society. It is surely not 27%, since it is upper limit fixed by the supreme court to avoid the breach of 50% reservation. This is a very important statistics which is required by bureaucrats, politicians to design their day to day work.

For the first time UDISE+, has made available the entire student population of various social categories to researchers and policy makers for sound decision making. Detailed reports and publication can be accessed by clicking below:

UDISE+ (udiseplus.gov.in)

Based on the above data, the estimates for OBC population for various states in India is given below

% of OBC population in various states.

Average OBC population in India is at 44.72%

Highest OBC population is in Puducherry ( 72.52%) followed by Tamilnadu( 67.46%).

States like Karnataka and Bihar also have a high OBC population of more than 60%. Karnataka has 62.91% OBC population and Bihar has 62.11% OBC population.

Apart from this, there are many states whose OBC Population is above Indian average.

Arunchal Pradesh — 51.76%

Chattisgarh — 46.09%

Jharkhand — 47.62%

Madhya Pradesh — 43.7%

Punjab — 48.88%

Telangana — 49.63%

Uttar Pradesh — 53.6%

Surprisingly, West Bengal has just 15.84%.

One more important data is the proportion of Muslim Population in various states.

Average Muslim Population in India = 14.26%

Highest Muslim Population Proportion is in Lakshadweep at 99.44%. Next is in Jammu Kashmir at 62.03%.

Other states with substantial Muslim population are Assam (40.7%), Kerala (35.53%), Ladakh ( 58.16%) and West Bengal ( 31.23% )

Uttar Pradesh ( 15.48%), Telangana ( 15.75%), Delhi ( 15.25%), Karnataka ( 15.36% ) have population proportion higher than average Muslim population in India.

It is also important to see where the non muslim minorities can make a significant difference.

All India average is at 3.67% which is very negligible.

However, in few states there is big difference

For example, in Meghalaya ( 79.73%), Mizoram ( 96.80%), Nagaland ( 80.23%) has large presence of christian population.

Similarly in Punjab, 52.77% of population are sikhs.

Apart from this there are smaller states like Andaman and Nicobar ( 20.64%), Arunchal Pradesh ( 40.10%), Goa ( 16.00%), Kerala ( 13.52%),Ladakh ( 36.03%, Manipur( 39.63%), Sikkim ( 34.42%) have substantial proportion of non muslim minorities.

I hope this benefited you all.
