Africa is on the brink of becoming a leading force in the web3 world. Growth in cryptocurrency adoption is being driven by mass internet accessibility, given that 30% of sub-Saharan Africa is now connected to the Internet. This improved infrastructure resulted in an increase of 1,200% in Africa’s cryptocurrency adoption rate from July 2020 to June 2021. World Mobile’s recent report shows that 4 out of 5 VC and private equity investors are predicting an entrepreneurial boom in the next decade, reinforced by the increase in VC interest in African startups in 2021. Africa is leading the world in mass web3 adoption through innovation.

A major issue that is holding back African startups is their need for more technical talent. Given the relatively new concepts web3 uses to provide its advantages over web2, retail adoption is being slowed by a lack of education around concepts like blockchain, smart contracts, and Decentralized Finance (DeFi). Industry participants are rushing to gain market share to capitalize on the promise of growth that the next decade offers through extensive education programs.

Binance announced a plan to launch a crypto education hub in Cameroon

Binance, the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchange, announced the launch of a crypto education hub in Yaounde, Cameroon. Binance intends to build out local infrastructure to improve web3 literacy and adoption while also offering global job opportunities and skill development programs. Given that 66.5% of Cameroon’s population lacks access to the internet, this physical training facility will equip web3 enthusiasts with more resources as well as foster local communities. Over the past 2 years, Binance has progressively expanded its reach through blockchain education across Africa, having educated over 600,000 Africans in the basics of web3 so far.

Polygon and Xend Finance to launch web3 education program for African developers

Polygon (MATIC), in partnership with cryptocurrency bank Xend Finance, launched an 8-week intensive educational course and hackathon to provide the resources needed for African builders to bring to life the next wave of real-world blockchain-based solutions. The Polygon Bootcamp Africa has two concurrent tracks tailored to fit both beginner and more experienced developers. The best Beginner Track projects will get bounties, while the best Mastery Track submissions will also be chosen for Polygon’s Accelerator program. Through this program, Polygon intends to provide mentorship and funding to grow the next wave of African web3 superstars.

Circle and Mara Foundation team up to grow web3 capacity in Africa

As part of the Mara Foundation’s mission to reduce inequalities in Africa by leveraging blockchain technology, they announced a partnership with Circle, the issuer of USD Coin (USDC), to provide Africa-based developers with the necessary resources to build blockchain solutions. With this developer-first approach, Circle and Mara hope to jointly raise awareness of USDC and train one million web3 developers for Africa over the next five years. This partnership aims to empower the developers to transform their community and the continent through a combination of college ambassador programs, developer masterclasses, and workshops.
