Christians Must Stop Disguising LGBTQ Exclusion as Religious Freedom

Discrimination is un-American and un-Christian

In a move President Biden won’t be able to instantly roll back, the Trump Administration just made it easier for federal contractors to use religious arguments to justify firing or refusing to hire LGBTQ people. Legal analysts agree the Supreme Court is all set to recognize anti-LGBTQ discrimination as religious liberty. The high court and the Christians who ask for this privilege are wrong. Excluding LGBTQ people is not liberty. It’s un-American and un-Christian.

I once worked beside a man who could have destroyed my career (and maybe my life) with a snap of his fingers. That he didn’t testifies to the power of pluralism, to respect for diversity, and to Christian love of neighbors. His behavior highlights a growing crisis facing the U.S. as conservative religious people fight legally to maintain privilege and destroy pluralism.

Let me explain.

Writers joke all the time that at least their mothers will read their work if nobody else will. But what if your writing was classified Top Secret and restricted even from most people with clearances?

And what if your masterpieces were boring as hell … by design?
