Don’t Be Fooled by the LGB Alliance

They’re a trans-exclusionary hate group

I almost hesitate to publish an article about a UK group trying to exclude transgender people from LGBTQ activism and community. Late last year, when I first started seeing stories pop up about a so-called LGB Alliance, I figured they were fringe outliers who didn’t need any more attention than they already had.

But as a long-time LGBTQ activist and an early member of New York City’s Queer Nation, I feel that the need to speak up is now. The exclusionary construction of LGB Alliance is offensive, discriminatory, and so contrary to the aims of the movement to win liberty for members of gender and sexual minorities that remaining tactically silent seems no longer wise.

Additionally, the UK government recently signaled it will retreat on proposed transgender equality legislation and even indicated they will restrict access to some public facilities to transgender women. In doing so, the government has cited LGB Alliance, implying significant controvery exists among LGBTQ people regarding transgender inclusion. This is untrue and must be forcibly countered.

When I first arrived in Greenwich Village in 1990 as a starry-eyed gay youth accustomed to hiding instead of living out, I barely understood what gender variance meant. I knew I was afraid of…
