Cincinnati’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade marks is seventh year as an “Anti-LGBTQ Event”

What does St. Patrick’s Day for straight people (only, please!) in Cincinnati have to do with Prince Charles, Buckingham Palace, Orders of the British Empire, and Staten Island? More than you might think!

What do YOU think about when you think about St. Patrick’s Day?

Parties, green beer, leprechauns? If you have Irish roots, do you think about family, ancestors and ancient lore like I do? Do you slip a little Tullamore Dew into your coffee before heading out of the house to brave a brisk March wind on the parade route?

Did you know that for LGBTQ people, St. Patrick’s Day has long been a day of exclusion? Did you know that for decades, our community groups, social clubs, and veterans organizations have been barred from participating in parades in most American cities?

Bans on LGBTQ groups were only lifted in 2014 and 2015 in New York and Boston, respectively — and then only partially.

I wasn’t surprised to read yesterday that Cincinnati’s St. Patricks’s Day excludes…
