Berlin at sunset from Thousand Wonders

“Get the hell away from me,” shouted Juliette in German. She tugged up on the heavy suitcase and struggled to walk faster.

The man beside her laughed then growled in Russian. “Slow down, beautiful. Why the heavy bag? Going somewhere?”

“Screw you,” she answered in the same language, straightening herself on top of high heels to emphasize her towering height. She’d left the apartment last, knowing the Russian agents never paid any attention to her. She wanted to watch Ian and Dima disappear, to make sure they were safe and unobserved.

She’d been shocked to see one of the men trail quietly after them toward the U-Bahn station. Now the other one was invading her space on the sidewalk, walking so close she could smell sour onions on his breath.

She reminded herself that she knew how to deal with pushy men.

She gritted her teeth and shouldered hard into the rush-hour crowd massing at the entrance to U-Bahnhof Wittenbergplatz. The man glued himself to her elbow, pressing into her.

She took a deep breath as she approached the top of the stairs leading down into the tunnel, relaxing and smiling at the man, opening her mouth as if she was going to speak. Then she lunged…
