Character. Morality. Sexism. Toxic masculinity. Rape culture.

All of these are terms that come up when discussing Donald Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court. As I write this piece, Kavanaugh is testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee — denying allegations of sexual assault leveled by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

Two other women have made similar allegations, including Deborah Ramirez, who knew Kavanaugh when they were both students at Yale College.

Interestingly, both of Kavanaugh’s freshman-year roommates have voiced support for Ramirez, detailing the judge’s propensity to frequently drink to incoherence and to behave very belligerently when he did so.

I’m writing about one roommate in particular today.

I’m writing about character. I’m writing about how homophobia has its roots in sexism and misogyny. I’m writing about the kind of man who would not only show great disrespect to women, but to gay men. I’m writing about the kind of elite, prep school athlete who would shun gay people and treat them inhumanely.
