In my memory, Berlin and the Greek Islands of the late Cold War era pulse with youth, adventure, and erotic possibility. As a young intelligence officer in the US Air Force I had to be very careful about meeting other gay men, but sometimes I managed it.

Have you ever met someone impossible, utterly unthinkable, only to be jolted by an erotic spark so fierce that you were drawn to them despite the danger?

Once in Berlin, I encountered a handsome, funny, sexy young Russian at a festival, only to discover that his father was a senior officer in the Soviet Army. We spent the day together, drawn together, parting only reluctantly.

Given the sad ways of the world, I never saw him again, despite the fact that we lived in the same city. A razor-wire wall and two competing ways of life kept us apart.
