Singular Queer Heroes

In the course of my long life as an LGBTQ activist and educator, I’ve had the incredible good fortune to meet and befriend several queer people whose impact on the world has been singular and extraordinary. Larry Kramer, Anne Northrup, Peter Staley, and Quentin Crisp number among them.

I’ve known many less-prominent people who nevertheless count as heroes in the struggle for full equality for members of gender and sexual minorities.

This Pride season, I highlighted one particular man I’ve never met, but who stands high on my list of personal heroes.

I suppose calling Peter Tatchell a one-man revolution is an overstatement, but if so, it’s a rhetorical device resting on strong foundations. Tatchell has been making a difference for queer people everywhere since his youthful days with the radical Gay…
