Wadi Shab & Snake Canyon, Oman
While working in Oman I had some time off to hike some of the Wadis. The wadis or valleys are the source of water along the northern coast of Oman.
Wadi Shab is one of the more popular and well known wadis in Oman. It is known for is deep blue-green water and great cliff diving.
This section of the canyon was used for the final event of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in 2012. The platform was set up on the cliff above the frame on the left image
As you move further up the canyon you begin to see aqueducts and terraced areas used to take advantage of the water for farming.
Snake canyon is section of Wadi Bani Awf that contains a very deep cut canyon. The canyon was fairly dry this time of year so many of the sections that you can normally just jump down in to the pool below became sketchy climb downs. Luckily we brought along about 60 feet of one inch tubular webbing with us to help with the climb downs. The trip down Snake Canyon is a one way trip unless you are an experienced climber with equipment. If we hadn’t had the webbing, we could have been in the canyon for a very long time.
