Africa Regional Journalism Workshops 2021
The International Center For Journalists (ICFJ), in partnership with the U.S. State Department’s Africa Regional Services (ARS), is organising an in-depth training program in Portuguese for African journalists. The program aims to equip journalists with resources, tools and knowledge covering existing and new challenges, such as Covid-19 and disinformation, as well as create lasting professional ties between African and American journalists. Journalists in Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique and São Tomé and Principe can apply for this free program. For details and how to apply, click here.

Albert Londres Prize for print, broadcast and book entries
French-speaking journalists ages 40 and younger can compete for a prize. For the print media prize, applicants must submit up to six reports published between June 14, 2020 and June 11, 2021. For the book prize, applications must include a PDF file of the book. No print copies are accepted. For the broadcast media prize, submissions must include an online link to the video story or documentary broadcasted between June 14, 2020 and June 11, 2021. For details and how to apply, click here.

PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival
Filmmakers ages 25 and younger are invited to submit films on migration, diversity, social inclusion and prevention of xenophobia. Videos must be less than 5 minutes long, include English subtitles and be produced after Dec. 31, 2018. Winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the PLURAL+ 2021 Festival and Awards Ceremony late in 2021 in a location to be announced. For details and to apply, click here.

Benjamin Mkapa African Wildlife Photography Awards
Visual journalists can apply for this new award. The competition seeks to engage audiences in documenting and conserving wildlife and wildlands in modern Africa through the art of photography and video. There is also an overall grand prize of US$30,000. Category winners will receive US$1,000 each, and the grand prize winner, US$5,000. For details and to apply, click here.

Funding available for media entrepreneurs
Budding media companies with a positive social impact can apply for funding. The Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) is accepting applications for the MDIF Ventures. The initiative will invest in projects aimed at addressing accountability, strengthening debate or reducing information poverty. Orange Knowledge Programme
Midcareer journalists from several developing countries can apply for a scholarship to attend a short course in the Netherlands. Candidates must be from Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Congo (DRC), Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Yemen and Zambia. The fellowships are intended for the cost of living, course fees, visa, travel and insurance. West Africa Media Excellence Conference and Awards 2021 (WAMECA)
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) is calling for entries for the 5th edition of the WAMECA. The Awards are opened to journalists from print, electronic and online media in Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone countries in West Africa. WAMECA 2021 will be held on October 22 and 23 in Accra, Ghana and will focus on the theme: Misinformation, Digital Media Regulation and Journalism in Africa. For details and to apply, click here.

The Allard Video Competition
Filmmakers and storytellers can submit a video on corruption and human rights issues to this contest. Entries can be documentary in nature or cover stories focusing on corruption or human rights issues. Videos must be original, unpublished and no more than 7 minutes long. African Fact-Checking Awards
Journalists and journalism students across the continent can enter the awards. To qualify, entries must have first been published or broadcast on any date from 23 August 2020 to 31 July 2021. They should expose a claim on an important topic that originated in or is relevant to Africa as either misleading or wrong. The winner of the working journalist category will get a prize of US$3,000, while the runner-up will be awarded $1,500. The winner of the student journalist category will get a prize of $2,000, and the runner-up $1,000. For details and to apply, click here.

Rainforest Journalism Fund
The Pulitzer Center invites journalists working on projects related to tropical rainforests to submit a proposal to the Rainforest Journalism Fund. The Pulitzer Center will pay for costs associated with reporting projects on tropical rainforests, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the local media. Rapid Response Fund
The Rapid Response Fund aims to facilitate the digital emergency response community to resolve threats in a timely and comprehensive manner for individuals, communities, and organisations whose free expression has recently been repressed. To resolve digital emergencies, OTF offers both direct financial support as well as technical services from trusted partners to high-risk people and organisations, such as bloggers, cyber activists, journalists, and human rights defenders.
