Packet, the cloud computing company that specializes in bare metal infrastructure launched an edge computing service in 11 new locations. This move expands Packet’s footprint to cover major locations in Asia, Europe, and North America. The new infrastructure is available through spot-market based pricing, which means that the customers can bid for compute resources instead of paying a flat price.

Edge computing is the next big thing for cloud providers. By expanding the capabilities to the edge locations, they deliver a subset of features targeting applications that demand low-latency and local processing. Customers building a new breed of applications based on IoT, AR/VR, autonomous vehicles, and next-gen gaming utilize edge computing to enhance user experience. Major cloud providers including Amazon and Microsoft have announced their edge computing services.

According to Packet, the new edge computing service features a single server configuration based on an Intel SkyLake processor. It comes with Packet’s full networking and infrastructure automation suite where servers are deployable within minutes via API, standard DevOps tools or the Packet portal, and take advantage of a new spot market feature for demand-driven pricing. Customers can leverage their own IP space, deploy global anycast networks and build custom Layer 2 or SD-WAN networks across Packet’s scalable transit and transport network.
