Perimenopause is menopause’s less famous little sister. While she doesn’t get as many headlines, she still has the power to upend lives. As you approach the age where she typically makes her entrance you might be hearing the whispers:

“My sister went through perimenopause, and her skin got so itchy that she gave up her corporate job and started working at a steel wool factory, so she could always have something scratchy close at hand.”

“My friend’s mood swings were so dramatic that they channelled their emotions into acting, and now they’re an Oscar winner. Maybe this doesn’t sound so bad, but it’s intolerable. They bring that trophy EVERYWHERE.”

“When my mother went through perimenopause, her hot flashes became so intense that she set the mattress on fire. We couldn’t get renters’ insurance after that, because she was considered high risk.”

These stories might sound like urban legends, but they are actual common symptoms and stories that happen to lots of people approaching the wacky wastelands of middle age. Sound bad? It is. But, that’s only the beginning. Things can get way, way, way weirder.
