When Betty Comden and Adolph Green first wrote the screenplay for what would become the hit musical romantic comedy Singin’ in the Rain, sources say that the wire mesh trashcan in the corner of their office was overflowing with discarded, balled-up ideas. For decades, the mystery of what was on those pieces of paper has gone unsolved. Until now.

For the first time ever, here are the initial ideas of what Singin’ in the Rain could have been.

Breakdancing in the Earthquake

Imagine: the star character is a hip-hopper extraordinaire with a need for the beat and a passion for spinning on his head. But oh no, the earthquake hits in the middle of his big dance number. Will the shaking of the earth inhibit his performance, or will the added challenge push him to the limit and give him the opportunity to showcase his proficiency in moving to the rhythm and and toprocking to the beat? Only if he can avoid the falling power lines and sinkholes.
