Janne: A magical life
3 min readNov 30, 2023

The day before Trevor was born, it was a warm day. Janne was uncomfortable because she was already several days past her due date.

Janne’s pregnancy was not the easiest. The first three months were at risk. At the time, I recall getting an app to follow up details of the pregnancy day by day. We read that at a certain time, the baby would be the size of a plum. There was some other mention of the word “plump”. So that became our code word: Plumpo. I would ask every morning, “how is Plumpo doing?” Janne would say sometimes that Plumpo was moving or that he was hungry.

The day before Janne went into the hospital, we took a walk not so far from our place. We went to the beach, were looking at some flowers, took a walk around a park nearby. At the end, the sunset was so beautiful so I started making photos of Janne and some flowers on the ground. She was not only uncomfortable with the overdue pregnancy, but with posing for me too.

Janne went next day into the hospital. They had to induce the birth. Trevor didn’t want to get out so they rushed Janne for a C-section as it was getting into dangerous territory.

Janne’s second pregnancy was easier. It just sailed through. Doctors had some concerns with this pregnancy so she had to take some scary tests. While Janne was getting an ultrasound, I started looking at a book with Estonian baby names. I saw the Estonian name “Undo” (in English, it’s pronounced “oon-doh”) which became one of the code names. The other one was Vambola, an old Estonian name, which sounds like “Tómbola” in Spanish.

Daniel was healthy which made us relaxed. During this pregnancy is when we found our house from the TV Tower. We moved in the interim and were living here for a couple of month before he came out. He was very active all the time as he still is. A couple of days before his birth, we went to a beach nearby to watch the sunset. Trevor was playful, Janne was annoyed, I was making photos, just your regular evening.

My intention was to have photos for Trevor and Daniel to remember when they were old. I got them more than we bargained for.
