Janne: A magical life

Last Friday, Daniel asked for a song: Colleen Green’s Deeper Than Love. It starts with some electronic noise before the bass starts in full. He wonders about how these songs are created. I say that Green likes to use electronic elements combined with her guitar. He would like to do it himself.

After Janne died, my enjoyment for music froze for a few weeks. The first artist I discovered after was Colleen Green and the first song I heard was Deeper Than Love. I listened to it for the first time on November 13th, exactly three months after Janne left (I have data to prove it).

The song starts with a slow and mellow bass. Its lyrics are gory and confessional. There is a verse that catches my attention: “how can I give you my life when I know you’re just gonna die?” This is a song full of questions and fears and self-criticism. I read in an interview where Green said that she was scared to release it as it reveals a lot about her.

When Daniel heard it first, we talked about its style. He thinks it’s a bit sad because of the tone, while for me, it just fits among my music. We talked about how music makes you feel. I love those conversations.

I asked him if he’d like to look at music synthesizers in my favorite shop in town. We could try to recreate some of that electronic music and maybe even play together. Buying an instrument is not new for me. I bought sometimes a little instrument as a gift for the boys: a ukulele, harmonicas, melodica, a cajón, a sopranino recorder.

When we arrive at the music shop, both boys go away to try all instruments around. Trevor focuses on pianos while Daniel focuses on everything. A friendly assistant explains about synthesisers. After his explanation, I made my choice quickly and got a small one that can be played on its own or can be hooked to a computer.

While we drive back home, Daniel brings up Deeper Than Love again. He thinks that because of the tone, this must be a Halloween song. He asked me when it came out first, meaning its release date. For as curious as I am, I didn’t know it.

As soon as I can, I check its release date. Deeper Than Love was released on the 24th of February 2015. That was Janne’s birthday.
