#195 Summer rain
The sun is out and it’s warm outside. I’m still surprised about Summer at these high latitudes. From this perspective, I grew up in what is essentially Summer weather all year long. I have to pack winter clothes and get out lighter jackets. Janne would switch to white wine and would start enjoying the outdoors.
During my first Summer in Estonia, I barely slept. The sun rises at 4 a.m. and it’s just twilight during the night. I would wake up in what was the middle of the night for me and couldn’t go back to sleep. Janne looked for an eye mask for me. As they were in demand, she picked the only one available. We laughed for years about the pink mask I had to use that Summer. I bet I looked handsome.
Daniel has inherited Janne’s love for the beach. He wants to go as soon as it’s bright, but the water here doesn’t get swimmable until later. Trevor is more like me: we avoid the sun at all costs. I dislike that I go out and tan very well immediately. Janne on the other hand would have loved to have my skin. We joked about trading between ourselves.
We always remembered our Summers in Dublin. The water in the sea would definitely not get warm at all, but that didn’t stop us from exploring different places by the sea side. My favorite story to tell people was that during the first Summer we lived in Dublin in 2006, I counted only about 7 days when it hadn’t rained a bit. At least it was warm enough to ditch our winter jackets.
Every year, as soon as the Summer starts, I always played my favorite anthem for this season. It’s in German, a language Janne and I found romantic till the end. This song talks about the Summer rain, about how it gives a new opportunity for everyone. Reading the lyrics today, it takes a new meaning. That rain also gives new life. Eventually the sun will break through the clouds. Even if my clouds will last for a while, I’m ready.
