#214 A once-in-a-lifetime chance
The boys and I were in Barcelona, a city that has been meaningful. Janne and I came together only once, and I was here a few more times on my own. For a time, I fantasized about moving here and even did an interview, but it was not to be (Dublin got us instead).
When I came the first time by myself, I found a street market not so far from Plaça de Catalunya and bought a pair of silver earrings for Janne. They look like the Windows logo. She was actually upset, because she said that she would never wear street jewelry. Of course, she changed her mind eventually and got to like those earrings. She wore them often while we were living in Dublin.
When Janne and I visited Barcelona, we had only 24 hours. We made the best out of each one of them. I remember that we had a great seafood meal with sangrias. It was a touristy place on a boat by the seaside, but who cares when the memories were happy. It was a pretty good sangria.
We managed to see a friend this time. He and his wife invited us over. For Trevor and Daniel it was as if they knew them forever. I particularly got Daniel his wish: he is not that interested about the place, but mainly about meeting my friends.
When flying out, Janne and I realized then that this airport, El Prat, has an outside area even after you have passed security checks. Janne was still smoking then so she had a couple of cigarettes while I was next to her. I remember it as a happy occasion and conversation. It was a sunny day and warm weather.
This time, I wanted to see the same space. I feel Janne’s presence in every place we visited together. I tell the boys where we are going and that Mom was there once. We enter that outdoors area. I tell them that I like this airport as you can still be outdoors while waiting for your plane.
Daniel asked if this is uncommon in airports. I said that this is the only airport I’ve visited with such a place. Maybe it’s not so common. He then told us that he wants to go explore a bit on his own. He said that this might be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to do it. That’s the spirit, boys.
