“A tribute to Lagos at the occasion of President Macron’s official visit” by Fatoumata Bâ, Founder & Executive Chair of Janngo and Managing Partner of Janngo Capital
“People who know well Nigeria in general and Lagos in particular will tell you how vibrant this bustling megacity can be and the least I could say is that the last 2 days have been reflecting this saying to the fullest!
Lagos is for sure, one of the most exciting places to seize opportunities in the world : home to 20 million souls, 6th largest GDP in Africa if it was a country (more than Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and Cameroon combined) and almost 65% of Lagosians under 25 years old.
Lagos is also a perpetual ode to culture in all its forms and in so many places : from the world-class luxury curation of Alara to the Freedom Park, built on prison ruins and where everyone mingles in celebration of its cultural heritage while dancing on Afropolitan vibes; from the hidden treasures of Terrakulture and Nike Art Centre to the legendary Arctivism of the New Afrika Shrine.
Of course, one cannot forget the many challenges of living in this megacity that have become almost a second home to me : the loud traffic, the generators noise, the slaloming okadas and danfos and the daily hustle of millions for a better life. But we, as entrepreneurs, have to see opportunities in every challenge, supporting the fierce Lagosians in building the Lagos of tomorrow : a smart city with affordable access to quality energy, modern transportation and mobility services while creating more economic opportunities to empower its deserving people and showcasing the uniqueness of its culture to the entire world.
I was proud to contribute to this vision as a Founding Member of the French-Nigerian Business & Investment Club alongside Aliko Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu, Tony Elumelu, Mike Adenuga, Jim Ovia, Ronald Chagoury, Patrick Pouyanne, Sidney Toledano, Bernard Gautier, Jean-Charles Decaux, Cathia Lawson and so many other outstanding leaders joining forces across sectors to build a better Lagos.
It has been also such a unique experience to witness in the electrifying temple of afrobeat a shift of paradigm and change of narrative, getting ready to show to the world the richness and diversity of African cultures, with the support of icons like Femi Kuti, Youssou Ndour and Angelique Kidjo.
As we say, « until the story of the hunt is told by the Lion, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the Hunter » : come on Lions, let’s tell our stories and glorify our culture by Africans, for Africans, funded by Africans.
Lagos, Eko akete, ilu ogbon, I’ll be back soon !”
