Maruyama Park: Kyoto’s Best Park for Cherry Blossom Viewing

Maruyama Park (円山公園) is Kyoto’s most popular park for cherry blossom viewing. In a vast space of 86,000 m2, there are over 680, various kinds of cherry trees including Somei Yoshino and Yamazakura in the park. Most of people visit the park to see the iconic weeping cherry tree (Shidarezakura) which is 12m high and 88 years old, attracting millions of visitors as the symbol of cherry blossom in Kyoto.

Because Maruyama Park offers various kinds of cherry trees, some of them start blooming from mid March and visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms till mid April. However, the best time for viewing is from late March to early April.

The park is also a popular spot for night viewing of cherry blossoms (Yozakura) and the light-up at the park is available till late as 1 am. During the cherry blossom season, there will be numbers of small stalls, seats and tables in the park and visitors can enjoy eating and drinking while watching cherry blossoms.
