The International Wine Challenge, the world’s biggest wine competition, is held in London since 1984. The competition has the Sake division for last 10 years ,which is because Japanese Sake has been more popular in worldwide. Sake is Japan’s national alcohol beverage, called Nihonshu in Japanese. It’s made from rice, and its tastes and flavors are various depending on regions of origin.

The Champion Sake in 2015 “ Homare Sake Brewing Company’s Aizu Homare Junmai Daiginjo” were presented as a souvenir to the leaders of countries who attended the G7 Summit in Iseshima. However you can get it easily since all Sakes the IWC handles are available in the marketplace.

International Wine Challenge in 2016

The Sake division of the IWC was held in Hyogo prefecture, Japan instead of London this year, which produces Sake most in Japan and is the origin of Yamada Nishiki rice (its 80th anniversary this year.) 57 judges from 14 countries come judged 1282 varieties (the largest number ever.)

Dewazakura Sake Brewing Company’s Dewazakura Dewanosato Junmai from Yamagata prefecture has won the competition in 2016. It smells like an apple but tastes a little spicy.

You can get it even at convenience stores cheaply! Taste like a champagne.

2. Yamada Nishiki

This 80th years anniversary was commemorated in the IWC this year. You can try it at many Japanese pubs. It’s very popular with Japanese people and tastes sweet, and the flavour vanish away soon.

3. Dassai

Dassai, mainly produced in Yamaguchi prefecture, also tastes sweet, very smooth and really easy to drink. So be aware of drinking it too much! Otherwise, hung-over waits for you next day morning.
