I love writing and reading on Medium. One of the reasons why I like it so much is its functions, such as clap, highlight and response. I wrote about the ‘Clap’ before. So, if you are interested in it, please refer to the story below;
Funny thoughts about Medium Claps
Do you care about how many time your readers clap your story?
Today, I want to talk about its ‘highlight’ function.
I love Medium’s highlight function too. I like highlighting other people’s stories as well as getting my stories highlighted.
Every reader must have different criteria for marking highlight. You may highlight;
- where you liked
- where you want to add a comment
- or, where you want to quote later on.
With any reasons, it is a nice feeling when some parts of your stories were highlighted, isn’t it?
For writers, you can reassure that your stories were surely read when you get your pieces highlighted because highlighting is not as easy as giving claps without reading through a whole story. I know some people clap on someone’s stories even when they haven’t read them in order to get the writer’s attention and to bring them to read their stories.
Therefore, the writers can make sure that the stories were read by the person who has highlighted.
Having said that, I sometimes have a funny feeling about getting the highlight. Sometimes I want to ask, “Really? Why that part??” I imagine that you also have had interesting highlights on your stories if you are a writer as well — or, maybe it was me; a funny highlighter.
The Ecstasy of Writing
When you have sex, many of you are looking for an orgasm and start the action. It is the same for writing, at least for…
In this story above, I said that I have a certain point or sentences in each story which I really wanted to write. No matter whether it was a sentence or paragraph or a whole chapter, it is like a climax for me, as a writer.
If my readers can highlight on exactly that part — my climax, I will be so happy and feel like that somebody totally understands about me, well, I know it’s a pipe dream though. Anyway, it is a feeling of euphoria.
Disappointingly, it is not always like that, of course.
More often, there are highlights with which you want to say; “Eh? At that part? Are you sure?”
As a reader, I must have given funny highlights to other people’s stories, too. You may have wanted to say; “Hey, Hana, why did you highlight that part??”
When I started reading stories in English on Medium, especially, I highlighted a lot of expressions which I found are interesting or the phrases which I wanted to remember for learning English as a second language. So, for the native English writers, it might not have been understandable why I had put highlights there.
Another thing which makes me laugh is that after I got used to putting highlights on people’s stories on Medium, I always want to highlight when I found interesting stories even on other platforms. I think there are other platforms which have a similar function as a highlight on Medium but I don’t think many people use their functions so much.
When I stop my fingers on my mouse after trying to drag and highlight in someone’s stories on other platforms, I realise that I have become a ‘noisy reader’ who wants to tell the authors which parts I have been impressed with in the stories.
