Edwin Hubble — was an American prominent astronomer who is one of the most important observational cosmologists of the 20th century. He implied the universe is expanding which is known as Hubble’s law. His cat Copernicus was behind his great achievements as a great helper…

Edwin Hubble

Hubble played a crucial role in establishing the field of extragalactic astronomy. And his name is most wildly recognized for the Hubble Space Telescope which was named in his honor, with a model prominently displayed in his hometown of Marshfield, Missouri.

Hubble was born in 1889 and showed his gift in sports. Talented athlete Hubble played baseball, football, basketball and he ran track in both high school and college. He also coached the boys’ basketball team in New Albany, Indiana after his father died in 1913.

After the end of World War 1, Hubble spent a year in Cambridge, where he renewed his studies of Astronomy. In 1919, Hubble was offered a staff position at the Carnegie Institution’s Mount Wilson Observatory[1], near Pasadena, California. He remained on staff at Mount Wilson until his death in 1953. Hubble was raised as a Christian, but later he became an agnostic.

Snuggled in the arms of astronomer Edwin Hubble, Nicolas Copernicus the cat was named after the Renaissance astronomer who dared assert that the Earth revolved around the Sun. The Huntington Library in San Marino, California, found a letter written by Hubble’s wife that insinuates that Nicolas may have helped Hubble uncover the secrets of the expanding universe:
When [Edwin] worked in the study at his big desk, Nicolas solemnly sprawled over as many pages as he could cover. ‘He is helping me,’ E explained.

Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science.

What Makes a Scientist?

A scientist naturally and inevitably … mulls over the data and guesses at a solution. He proceeds to testing of the guess by new data-predicting the consequences of the guess and then dispassionately inquiring whether or not the predictions are verified.

What Makes the Hubble Space Telescope So Special (abc NEWS)

The Hubble Space Telescope is a large telescope in space. NASA launched Hubble in 1990. Hubble is as long as a large school bus. It weighs as much as two adult elephants. Hubble travels around Earth at about 5 miles per second. That is as fast as driving a car from the East Coast of the United States to the West Coast in 10 minutes.

Hubble faces toward space. It takes pictures of planets, stars, and galaxies. Hubble has seen stars being born. Hubble has seen stars die. It has seen galaxies that are trillions of miles away. Hubble also has seen comet pieces crash into the gasses above Jupiter.

Science is the one human activity that is truly progressive. The body of positive knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation.

As the universe expands over time, denser regions draw in more and more matter, creating a "lumpy" distribution

By his inspired use of the largest telescope of his time, the 100-reflector on the Mount Wilson Observatory, Hubble revolutionized our knowledge of the size, structure, and properties of the universe. Hubble’s observations proved that galaxies are island universes.

Hubble also outlined a classification system for galaxies that is still in use. His greatest discovery was the linear relationship between a galaxy’s distance and the speed with which it is moving, known as the Hubble Constant[2].

… Little more about Copernicus. He frequently gave a gift to Hubble such as birds, lizards, mice… He didn’t really welcome guests of Hubble, and his confident Aldous Huxley, an English novelist, became a victim of Copernicus’s claws…

Hubble died in 1953, Copernicus died nine years later. He kept waiting for Hubble at the window until the christmas eve in 1962.
