Sakura (Cherry Blossom) symbolises the start of new beginnings and a flower that has captured the hearts of millions (including mine) for many centuries.

According to Japan Rail, cherry blossoms are expected to flower on 19 March and fully bloom on 26 March this year.

So here is my top 2 cherry blossom illumination spots in Tokyo!

  1. Meguro River (目黒川)

Meguro River is canal that has 800 over cherry blossom trees panted along the sides. It is one of the most popular cherry blossom illumination spots among tourists and locals.

Paper lanterns also lined along the canal which added to the romantic atmosphere.

While there are many stylish cafes along the river, you can also find many makeshift food and drink stores during the sakura illumination festival as well. Here is my sparkling rose wine that I bought to enjoy while admiring the sakura. ❤

Nearest station: Nakameguro station

Admission: Free

Illumination: sunset to 21:00

2. Chidorigafuchi (千鳥ヶ淵)

Another cherry blossom illumination spot that is well loved by the locals is Chidorigafuchi which offers a beautiful view of 260 cherry blossom trees that are planted along a 700 meters long pedestrian path.

Boat are available for rent to visitors during the day. I heard that the queue is 2 hours long!

Although there are no food and drink stores, the pedestrian path is much wider which makes it less claustrophobic than Meguro river.

Do expect to wait for a bit if you would like to take a close-up photo of the cherry blossoms!
