The Pokémon World Championships location for 2023 has just been revealed — Yokohama, Japan. The announcement was made on 22 August, at this year’s Pokémon World Championships being held in the UK.

Despite the franchise originating from Japan, the Pokémon World Championships has only been held in the US, Canada, and UK since the tournament’s inception in 2004.

The 2023 Pokémon World Championships will feature:

  • Pokémon Trading Card Game
  • Pokémon Go
  • Pokémon Unite, and
  • The new Pokémon Scarlet and Violet expansion to the mainline video game series

Pokkén Tournament DX will not be returning in 2023.

For those familiar with the mainline video game series, Vermillion City (the location of the third gym in Generation 1) was modelled off Yokohama, and adage was paid to this when the reveal was made at this year’s Pokémon World Championships. Yokohama is Japan’s second largest city by population and was one of the first Japanese ports open to foreign trade back in 1859.
