As someone who grew up in Tokyo, I know firsthand that Japan is one of the most unique countries in the world.

From its otaku (those interested in anime) culture and weird inventions to hi-tech gadgets and simplistic cuisine, the country boasts a flavor of its own.

Here are 8 things that are uniquely Japan.

Let’s dive right in.

1. Festival of the penis

It’s time to honor the penis. Yep, you heard it correctly.

The Japanese celebrate this Shinto festival known as Kanamara Matsuri every year in Kawasaki, about 18km from Tokyo, on the first Sunday in April.

Like most Japanese festivals, the large phallus is paraded in a float shaped like a shrine.

Even stores sell food candies, vegetables, and decorations shaped like a penis.

It’s typical to see both men and women on the streets licking penis lollipops, which is totally acceptable during this time.
