Kyushu is a treasure trove of history, culture, cuisine, and entertainment, offering a unique experience far from the well-worn tourist track. Often overlooked, it remains one of Japan’s best-kept secrets.

After my recent visit, I’ve put together a simple itinerary to help you break out of the usual Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto route and discover an unforgettable holiday destination, free from the crush of crowds.

Day 1: Flight from Tokyo (Haneda airport) to Fukuoka (Fukuoka airport); approximately 1 hour 45 minutes; 2 nights stay

Fukuoka

One of the best things about arriving at Fukuoka Airport is its prime location right in the city. After just a couple subway stops, you’ll find yourself in the heart of town. Drop your bags at your accommodation and dive straight into exploring.
