If you say to a Japanese friend, “I’m going to Yuzawa this winter,” you’re likely to receive the following response.

”You’re going skiing, right? Powder snow is so good!”

Thanks to the snow quality suitable for skiing and its easy accessibility from the Tokyo area, Yuzawa in Niigata prefecture has become a popular destination for one-day or overnight trips in winter. You can enjoy various winter sports, hot springs, and local cuisine.

I’m going to introduce Yuzawa today, but there is another lesser-known Yuzawa (湯沢) city in the Tohoku district. It’s located in a very snowy region in the southern part of Akita prefecture.

Akita is probably best known for Akita Inu (秋田犬), which is now even used as a name for cryptocurrency. To the east of the area are the Ou (奥羽) Mountains. The cold winter winds from the sea of Japan blow against the mountains, causing the city to get a lot of snow throughout the winter.
How much snow?
