“Saving My Stupid Youth” — The Best Japanese Show on Netflix
The Quirky Japanese TV series, ごめんね青春!, hits worldwide audiences
Despite writing about Japanese language and culture, I rarely watch Japanese television.
Let’s be frank — most Japanese TV is booooring. And the few Japanese TV shows I do enjoy featuring travel, nature, and food, aren’t available overseas.
Japanese scripted TV is highly formulaic and extremely predicable, and is either painfully maudlin or involve yakuza or time travel. Sorry, not interested.
So when I clicked on the first episode of Saving My Stupid Youth (ごめんね青春!) expecting yet another generic tale of high school yearning with teary eyes staring off into the distance, wow was I surprised.
The show is not only laugh out loud funny, but has an interesting story. It was unpredictable and inventive. And seriously quirky. I loved it.
