What Tokyo Station And A Japanese Song Taught Me About Adulthood
On Believing In The Best To Come
Last February, I stopped by Tokyo after seeing the world famous Sapporo Snow Festival in Hokkaido.
My first destination was Tokyo Station which was one of the locations featured in the 僕らだ (We Are) music video of the Japanese singer-producer Imase.
In the video, Imase is seen atop a building wearing a typical salaryman suit, seemingly frustrated as he gazes afar. The song opens with disappointment:
“We can say we’re grown now, but we don’t look any different, it’s like nothing’s changed… Are we already the adults that we always envisioned?”
As I heard these words, I immediately connected with the song.
I found this song during a time when I felt unsure of who I was or whether anything I did mattered.
Since then, Tokyo Station had this pull on me. I had to see it in person.
The sprawling area was a such a sight to behold. But what I didn’t expect was how calm I’d feel.
