I recently had the opportunity to visit Harrow International School, the prestigious British boarding school which just opened a new campus in Appikogen in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.

Born in Seoul and raised in Saudi Arabia and the United States, I’ve been fortunate that I didn’t have to study hard to learn languages. Understanding cultural differences came naturally while attending international kindergarten and public elementary schools overseas.

Although I hated to move around and kind of blamed my parents for not staying in one place so that I had to say goodbye to friends whenever our family moved, I am thankful for this rare opportunity that my parents gave me. It helped a lot in the later years with job opportunities.

Most of us Japanese wonder how it can be possible to have bilingual or multilingual children with both parents being Japanese?

If you can send your kids to at an international school from an early stage, that’s great. But it is quite difficult to have your Japanese kid study at an international school unless at least one parent is a foreign national or has lived overseas.

What is great about Harrow International School in Japan is even a Japanese student who does not have strong English ability, but is preparing to attend junior high school (7th to 10th grade) can attend. This could be the last chance to have a global education other than studying overseas during college.

Although your children are away at a boarding school, they’re still in Japan, so you can feel assured that if anything happens, you can go to see them. The school is located in rural Iwate prefecture, in the north of Japan, where there aren’t so many temptations to distract from school and children can focus on their studies in an ideal environment.

Kids who love winter sports in particular will love studying there with lots of winter activities.

The fees are quite high, but Harrow is famous as a great school with fantastic academics. From my experience with the Harrow School in Bangkok under the leadership of Michael Farley, I have no doubt the teachers there are all fantastic.

If you can afford it, this boarding school might be the best investment for the future of your children.
