Review — Is Web Design for Everybody on Coursera Worth it?

Hello guys, if you are looking for the best web design course on Coursera or want to join Coursera’s popular Web Design for Everybody: Basics of Web Development and Coding specialization but are not sure then you have come to the right place.

In the past, I have shared the best Coursera courses for web Developers and in this article, I am going to review Coursera’s web design for everybody’s specialization to find out whether it’s suitable for beginners and intermediate developers or not.

Like previously reviewed courses, we’ll review this course on three main parameters instructor reputation and teaching style, course content and structure, and social proof or what other people are saying about this course.

This is my tried and tested method to join online courses and I have used this to find hundreds of quality courses from Udemy, Coursera, Pluralsight, Educative, and other popular websites.

Web development is the activity that involves converting your idea into a website or a platform that offers services to people, like food delivery websites or e-commerce websites for shopping and platforms for handling payments like Paypal and strip, to name a few.

The development of any website involves three things to learn before starting your journey, which are the front-end development and which is what the users see and interact in their browser, second, the back-end development, which involves the development of the functionalities of the website does like handling payment and search functions and finally, the database where the website stores data.

The company needs to hire many developers to create different parts of the website. Some of them know-how only to create the front-end using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This course, called Web Design For Everybody, will teach you the basics of front-end development.

1. The Instructors Review

Two people from Michigan University create this specialization. The first one is Colleen van Lent, who worked in the University of Michigan school of information, where reached many IT topics such as web development.

The second instructor is Charles Russell Severance, who created one of the best python courses known as Python For Everybody.

2. Course Structure and Content

Now, let’s see what is covered in this Specialization and how the content is structured. This is an important criterion while joining any course or certification program online.

2.1. Introduction to HTML5

You will start learning how the internet works and how to access web pages from your browser, and you will get an introduction to HTML5 and its basic concepts before coding your own web page.

Next, you will jump into the coding section, and you will learn things like Document Object Model (DOM) and using HTML5 stage & syntax, adding images to the web page, adding a link to the text so when someone clicks on that text, it will redirect him to another URL and more.

Finally, learn how to hos your website and upload it to Github.

2.2. Introduction to CSS3

This section will teach you the CSS3 used to style your website and design it with a complex layout. You will learn about colors in CSS3 and how to style your text.

Next, you will move to advanced styling and learn about the box model, which is a fundamental concept you have to learn to make the design better for users. You will also learn how to style your links and lists and learn advanced selectors.

You will also see how you can style a link and when someone clicks on it or hover over it will change its color and style, and more.

2.3. Interactivity with JavaScript

JavaScript is a must language to learn if you plan to be a front-end web developer, and it adds interactivity to your website and builds rich UI components, and many more. So you will learn about JavaScript functions, folder structure, events, and more.

Next, you will learn about JavaScript arrays and JavaScript iteration and combining loops and conditionals and advanced conditionals.

Finally, you will learn about validating form data by creating a simple form and simple validation, comparing two inputs, and adding options to your form.

2.4. Advanced Styling with Responsive Design

The use of phones and tablets is increasing, and this makes the websites need to adopt a new design paradigm so if someone accesses the website from the phone, and should appear good not just on the desktop.

You will get an overview of the responsive design, and you will learn how to use the media queries in CSS3, which detects the screen size and will change the website design to fit the screen.

Next, you will learn how to use the frameworks of these languages you’ve learned to create your own website, like Bootstrap, a CSS framework, and learn some of its concepts.

2.5. Web Design for Everybody Capstone

This last section demonstrates your knowledge of creating responsive websites for a minimum of three platforms using the languages you’ve learned in this course.

This last course is segmented into six sections. In every section, they will guide you on how the website should look and which languages or frameworks you need to use to demonstrate your ability in developing responsive websites in this section.

After you complete this course, you have completed Web Design for Everybody: Basics of Web Development & Coding Specialization and you are eligible for a certificate of completion which you can showcase in your resume or LinkedIn profile.
