IT Careers Explained Through Construction Terms
And in plain English
Everyone knows the professions in construction: masons, fitters, painters, crane operators. They do not raise questions: this area has been formed and developed for many centuries, and the people working there are understandable to everyone. IT is a different story: over several decades, the industry has rapidly gained momentum, and its specializations have begun to “settle” relatively recently.
Let’s not stray too far from the construction topic — using its example, we will try to understand the professions in IT. Many specialists take part in the creation of a software product. They can be called differently, but it will be more or less canonical to define them as follows:
1. Project Manager
This person is responsible for everything: software development, sales, marketing, finance, development strategy, working with clients, and much more.
Everything is under his control, whether the commissioning is delayed, the approach to construction changes, or the price is reduced. Usually, the project manager is recognized by his never-ending phone, and he walks a couple of hours to his workplace, managing to solve a dozen things in the 20 meters from the elevator to his desk.
