Game 116: Jumbo Shrimp at Tides
Wednesday, September 15, 2021–7:05 p.m. ET
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (65–50) at Norfolk Tides (47–68)
Harbor Park — Norfolk, Va.
LAST TIME OUT:
Payton Henry and Justin Twine each hit solo home runs for Jacksonville, but the Jumbo Shrimp were unable to overcome a four-run first inning from Norfolk in a 7–2 loss on Tuesday. The Jacksonville bullpen kept them in it through the middle frames after Nick Neidert couldn’t escape the first. Parker Bugg pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Jumbo Shrimp, with Bryan Mitchell tallying two perfect frames. Jacksonville stranded 12 men on base in the game.
GAME INFO:
The Jumbo Shrimp and Tides continue a six-game series with game two set for 7:05 p.m. tonight at Harbor Park. The Jumbo Shrimp lead the season series 21–10, and are 33–21 on the road this season.
MEET THE TIDES:
Norfolk is the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Tides enter with a 47–68 record and are sixth in the Southeast Division.
Norfolk is managed by Gary Kendall, who returns for his second season with the Tides. Before joining the Tides in 2019, Kendall was the manager for the Bowie Baysox for eight seasons, setting the franchise managerial record for career wins at 570. Kendall led the Baysox to three postseason appearances, including the franchise’s lone Eastern League Championship in 2015.
Norfolk, like Jacksonville, is a very big Navy town, which is why the regular-season series between these two teams has been dubbed “The Navy Town Showdown.” As the winner of the series, Jacksonville will receive a ship’s bell as a trophy, presented by Geico Military.
The Orioles promoted catcher Adley Rutschman, the top-ranked prospect in Minor League Baseball, to Triple-A last month. Rutschman was selected by the Orioles in 2019 as the №1 overall pick out of Oregon State University. Since being called up, the switch-hitter is slashing .323/.415/.495/.910 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 28 games.
PITCHING MATCHUP:
LHP Shawn Morimando (3–4, 4.63 ERA)
Shawn Morimando was sensational his last time out when he retired the first 17 batters he faced against the Charlotte Knights. He ultimately gave up just one run on two hits in 5.2 innings. Tonight, he will make his 16th start for the Jumbo Shrimp. Morimando was acquired by the Marlins in 2021 as a minor league free agent. Before joining Miami, Morimando spent time in the Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays farm systems and played in the Australian Baseball League in 2020. Morimando has five pitches in his pitching arsenal: a four-seam fastball, cutter, changeup, curveball, and sinker.
RHP Ofelky Peralta (3-1, 5.09 ERA)
Ofelky Peralta will make his eighth start at the Triple-A level. In 35.1 innings he has struck out 34, but he has also yielded 34 hits and 17 walks with Norfolk. Peralta began the season with Double-A Bowie, where he went 5-2, 4.53 ERA, and was called up to Norfolk on July 27. Peralta signed as a free agent with the Baltimore Orioles in 2013 and has been in their farm system ever since. He deploys a fastball, curveball, and changeup.
