Shrimp Central: Jumbo Shrimp at Generals June 22, 2017

Jumbo Shrimp begin second half in Jackson

Tonight the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp begin the second half of the 2017 season by facing the Jackson Generals in the first game of a five-game series at The Ballpark at Jackson at 7:05 p.m. ET.

The Jumbo Shrimp enter the second half of the season on a positive note, having won three straight en route to a series victory over Pensacola last weekend at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Tonight the second half begins in Jackson, Tennessee, as the Jumbo Shrimp make their only trip to The Ballpark at Jackson.

Right-handed pitcher Joe Gunkel (1–3, 4.35 ERA) starts for Jacksonville against Jackson right-hander Brad Keller (3–5, 4.88 ERA).

Manager Randy Ready joined me earlier to discuss the start of the second half.

The Miami Marlins announced a series of transactions over the All-Star Break that impacts their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp roster prior to tonight’s game.

During Jacksonville’s All-Star break, Marlins infielders Adeiny Hechavarria and Martin Prado had their major league rehab assignments transferred to High-A Jupiter. Marlins right-handed relief pitcher Junichi Tazawa saw his major league rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A New Orleans.

Left-handed pitcher Chris O’Grady was transferred from Jacksonville to Triple-A New Orleans. O’Grady did not appear in a game for the Jumbo Shrimp.

In a corresponding move, left-handed relief pitcher Daniel Schlereth was transferred from Triple-A New Orleans to Jacksonville. Schlereth pitched in two games for the Baby Cakes, not allowing a run in his two and a thirds innings pitched. Earlier this season Schlereth had no wins or losses and a 2.70 ERA in his nine appearances with the Jumbo Shrimp.

Additionally, left-handed relief pitcher Greg Nappo and right-handed relief pitcher Hunter Adkins were released by the Marlins organization. Nappo was 0–1 with a 1.50 ERA in his nine relief outings for the Jumbo Shrimp, while Adkins was 1–2 with a 3.90 ERA in 15 appearances and one start with two saves for Jacksonville.

In a corresponding move, right-handed relief pitcher Tyler Higgins has been activated from Jacksonville’s disabled list to the active roster. Higgins has worked in 19 games in relief with a 1–3 record and a 4.28 ERA, and he was placed on the disabled list on June 14 with a right back strain.

Also in a corresponding move, left-handed relief pitcher Jeff Kinley has been transferred from High-A Jupiter to Jacksonville. Kinley was 2–0 with a 1.30 ERA in his 21 relief outings with six saves for the Hammerheads, and this is the first call-up to the Double-A level in his career.

Right-handed pitcher Omar Bencomo was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to June 19, with a left quad strain. Bencomo has been 4–4 with a 4.76 ERA in his 13 appearances and 11 starts for Jacksonville this season.

In a corresponding move, right-handed starting pitcher Trevor Richards has been transferred from High-A Jupiter to Jacksonville. Richards has been 7–4 with a 2.17 ERA in his 13 appearances and 11 starts for the Hammerheads this season, and was the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week on June 4.
