The major smartphone launch season is upon us and one of the first out of the gates is the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, instantly taking over the top spot in our list of best smartphones.

Samsung just launched its latest flagship device, the Galaxy Note 9, and the Note finds its way back to the top of our list. There are new Apple iPhone models, new Google Pixel 3 devices and many more. Here we list top 5 best smart phones of 2018.

  1. SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 9

For a few months last year, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 lived at the top of this list, With the recent launch of the Galaxy Note 9 and a few days of heavy usage it is time to put the Note 9 back on top as the best smartphone currently available.

The Galaxy Note 9 improves upon the Note 8 with a Bluetooth S Pen, more internal capacity and RAM, a massive 4,000 mAh battery, improved dual rear cameras with some software intelligence, enhanced audio capability, and new placement of the rear fingerprint scanner.

2. SAMSUNG GALAXY S9/S9 PLUS

Samsung launched the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus earlier this year. It’s an evolution in the Galaxy S line, but one that leads as close to perfection as you can expect for a smartphone today.

Samsung’s Infinity Display continues to take the top spot with every new release, trumping the Apple iPhone X that lived in that spot for a few months. There is 6GB of RAM, the fastest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 mobile processor, a rear dual aperture camera, another one with super slow motion support (S9 Plus only), the ability to add inexpensive microSD cards, Samsung Pay payment technology, wireless and fast charging, IP68 dust and water resistance, a USB Type-C standard port, and traditional 3.5mm headset jack. It also launches with Android 8.0 Oreo. There is nothing missing from the Galaxy S9 Plus and it deserves the top spot.

3. iPhone XS Max

Weight: 208g | Dimensions: 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 6.5-inch | Resolution: 1242 x 2688 | CPU: A12 Bionic | RAM: 4GB | Storage: 64/256/512GB | Battery: 3,179mAh | Rear camera: 12MP+12MP | Front camera: 7MP

The iPhone XS Max is Apple’s biggest and best iPhone — if you’re hands and wallets and large enough. It has an expansive 6.5-inch OLED screen with HDR10 support to make colors pop. It’s the perfect phone if you want a giant screen.

Behind that huge screen is an improved dual-lens 12MP camera. Apple outfitted it with Smart HDR and increased the sensor size to capture larger pixels. Don’t let that static 12MP number fool you. The iPhone XS Max (like the XS) has new depth-sensing abilities for adjustable bokeh (background blur) during and after a shot.

4. iPhone XS

Weight: 174g | Dimensions: 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 5.8-inch | Resolution: 1125 x 2436 | CPU: A12 Bionic | RAM: 4GB | Storage: 64/256/512GB | Battery: 2,659mAh | Rear camera: 12MP+12MP | Front camera: 7MP

Believe it or not, the iPhone XS is Apple’s best ‘small’ phone. It has a 5.8-inch screen, so it’s more one-hand-friendly than the Max, but still a sizable upgrade for some people.

It’s an upgrade over last year’s iPhone X, our previous best iPhone recommendation, though you’ll have to look more closely for the changes — the design isn’t different at all. It has a Smart HDR-capable 12MP camera, enhanced True Depth front-facing camera, and a fast A12 Bionic chipset, exactly like the larger iPhone XS Max.

5. iPhone X

Weight: 174g | Dimensions: 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm | OS: iOS 11 | Screen size: 5.8-inch | Resolution: 1125 x 2436 | CPU: A11 Bionic | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 64/256GB | Battery: 2,716mAh | Rear camera: 12MP+12MP | Front camera: 7MP

The iPhone X is as impressive as it is expensive, but if you really want the best iPhone today and don’t want to wait for the iPhone XI, this is the one to get today. Millions of Apple fans already have since it launched almost seven months ago. It’s the future of Apple’s smartphone.
