GREETINGS 👋

Artificial Intelligence, AI. It’s a hot topic these days, no doubt. But why? Are we about to achieve AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)? Not in the upcoming year (as far as we know).

So, why you could hear about AI from CEOs of tech giants during quarterly reports as well as from startups aiming to leverage “AI” in their pitches (to attract investors’ interest?)?

The answer: the rise of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) that have got the momentum in the last few years.

Due to the growth of the computing power of classical computers (Quantum Supremacy is almost there…), work on AI-related projects became more convenient. At Jedium, we work on Immersive Tech (Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality, XR), get experience & knowledge to augment human intelligence and contribute to the AI research.

In this and following articles, we want to describe what we do and the future ahead of all of us.

However, before delving deeper into Jedium’s subject of research, we would like to write about the history of AI. 🤓

TL;DR: the rabbit hole is deeper than you think. We — as human — have been passionate about AI for a long period of time: from Aristotle and Descartes to John von Neumann (who contributed a lot to the development of computer logic).

BIG DATA

In the 1930s, the interest in the research of AI soared. Scientists — despite proposing different approaches for the study of AI — achieved excellent results and started challenging each other’s theories and providing new ones. At that time, the Turing test — which has been already passed — was invented. Subsequently, Turing’s work became a fundamental knowledge base about computer systems that make axioms based on input data. Thanks to axioms, systems can draw conclusions after a user created queries or make predictions with impressive accuracy. Now, such systems are called neural networks.

There are several approaches to AI research (for instance, with the specific semantics and without it). Either we write logic, or a highly loaded computational program (i.e., a neural network). However, after the 1940s, (until now) there were no significant breakthroughs in the field of AI. There was an “AI winter” ☃️ — a decline in interest in the study of Artificial Intelligence. That happened due to the: (a) lack of computational power to build robust neural networks, (b) chosen approach for the development of AI that was too tricky and gave disappointing results.

A few years ago, computing power was enough to design very powerful neural networks. However, the interest in AI research was about to get a negative trend among ordinary people (but AI researchers still work hard to advance the topic). Worth mentioning, neural systems became a “trivial” part of our life. Voice assistants embedded in your daily-used gadgets, Machine Vision scanning documents via your phone, photo editors applying filters, and so on. People have got used to that; the “wow effect” is rear. Therefore, there is an assumption that the development of neural networks could not move as quickly as we expect. In other words, a new “AI winter” is on its way.

Although the tech sector doesn’t stop betting on AI, the industry has issues lowering productivity of ongoing researches:

  1. We don’t have much data to train ANNs.
  2. We need more types of data.

That is quite an unexpected conclusion at the first blush. However, what those companies get is quite a limited source of data (text data, “likes,” photo/video content, etc.)

What new (richer) data types we could get? From what/where?

Thinking about it, we’ve found an interesting approach that could be a solution to those problems.

JEDIUM

Jedium works on a platform that standardizes, simplifies the development of VR/AR applications and creates training systems for humans. By doing that, we’ve found that people have “hidden knowledge” (a skill set that one person has but the other doesn’t). A person with hidden knowledge can share it within his/her community. A problem is disguised in the title: those skills are hidden, and the person doesn’t know that he/she has those skills until other people have told about them.

Hidden knowledge is a basis for social learning. If there is knowledge that one student can give to others, then a teacher has less repetitive work to do. That hasn’t been tested yet because there were no specialized software systems. Jedium goes in that direction. We’ve a virtual environment where we can create conditions for a recording of hidden knowledge and use it to transfer knowledge to other students.

However, to take advantage of hidden knowledge — and create a productive learning environment — you need technologically-mature AI components. Based on gaps in knowledge and student’s preferences, we could build individual learning trajectories (Tailored Education). To do that, we need powerful algorithms for data analysis. We need trained neural networks.

EXPANDING INTELLIGENCE

Our mission is to expand intelligence by uniting social and technological knowledge to advance humankind.

The theory of teaching people has long developed in isolation from technological progress. Our goal is to remove that barrier, achieve synergy between the work of human and machine intelligence.

By doing that we want to understand what is really going on 🤓

THE WAY TO ACHIEVE THE MISSION

Jedium works on VR/AR technologies and applies them to education. Our values:

  • Quality.
  • Design.
  • Fun 🙂

We aim to raise the bar in quality of VR/AR apps and take the industry to the next technological level.

The field of AI is not easy for understanding. It has been developing for a long period of time. It experienced many ups and downs. At Jedium, we can’t imagine the future without coexistence of machine intelligence and humanity.

However, the future is now. Modern communication services — such as messengers — are cyber-social systems: systems where bots are active participants. So far, they are quite simple but there is a clear trend towards breakthroughs of their capabilities.

We want to contribute to the development of Artificial General Intelligence. We believe that it is necessary to start with education. A combination of cutting-edge technologies and educational processes can give convincing results and advance humanity. Our XR–ML approach is able to make the difference.

Peace 🌍
