Marathon vs. Sprint

Sometimes, we are sprinters running a marathon. It’s great for the first bit, but it’s a totally different race.

Others are marathon runners doing a sprint. There are many times when we’ve not properly identified the race which we are running.

We look at the scope of a project, the dream we have, or the goal we aspire to fulfill. Some of these truly are sprints (some are literally sprints, in fact). Many are marathons. And many, many more we don’t know. Sometimes we can plan around it and decipher whether it is a marathon or sprint, though many other times, well, we just need to take a steady pace.

There are many ways we can take the metaphor, but methinks it’s easier to switch from a marathon to a sprint, than the other way around.

Unless it’s a super short goal, sprints will burn you out. No need to burn out the first 1000 meters of a 26.2 mile jog.
